CHAPTER 8

I never, ever, ever would’ve thought last night was going to turn out like it had. Instead of jumping to the questions I’d had when Hank and I had talked about getting married a year or two ago, my mind drifted off to thoughts about a gorgeous wedding here at the campground. Maybe something in the fall or even the winter. I did love both seasons. Heck, I loved all the seasons equally.

To say the atmosphere turned from celebrating Daniel Boone Day to an engagement party was an understatement. Christine Watson showed up after the proposal with a few cakes she said didn’t sell that she didn’t want to waste. Blue Ethel and the Adolescent Farm Boys, along with Ilena accompanying them on the piano, played several slow songs for me and Hank to dance to. Mary Elizabeth had already started to make calls to wedding planners and told Christine to keep her calendar open. She even had me go put on a dress and some makeup so Waldo Willy could take an engagement photo for this morning’s Normal Gazette.

But just because I’d gotten engaged didn’t mean the new day wasn’t going to start with a bang.

And bang it did.

“I’m coming!” I yelled at whoever was banging on the door of my camper. “I said I’m coming!”

I tossed the comforter off me and slipped my feet into my slippers. “Come on, Fifi.” She was still nestled on the pillow next to mine. “You won’t be able to do that after I’m married.” I smiled and held my hand up to remind myself it was not a dream.

I couldn’t believe how tickled I was about how things had played out.

“Just because you’re engaged doesn’t mean we ain’t got a murder to solve.” It was Dottie.

When she heard Dottie, Fifi darted off the bed and past me down the short distance of the hallway of my campervan.

“Good morning.” I wiggled my hand in front of me after I opened the door to find Dottie on the other side. “Well, you’re not going to get Henry to propose to you looking like that.”

“What?” Dottie glanced down through her cigarette smoke at her pale-yellow housecoat with sparse feathers around the bottom. Her slipper shoes matched it, and her hair was still rolled up in pink sponge curlers around her head. “If this look don’t crank his tractor, then I don’t need him.” She laughed at her own joke.

“I brought you those.” She pointed to the picnic table I kept permanently placed to sit under my campervan awning when I rolled it out. “Coffee and this morning’s Normal Gazette.”

“Did the photos turn out?” All of a sudden, I felt an urgency to make sure it was all good.

“Look at you.” Dottie took a step back so I didn’t run her over on my way to the picnic table to get my grabby hands on the paper. “You are excited.”

“You know, Dottie, I’m just as shocked as you are.” I sat down and took a drink from one of the coffee cups she’d put down.
